Neurosurgical and Spine Services
Back and neck pain can be caused by a variety of issues, from pinched nerves to herniated discs and spinal cord compression. If spine pain is disrupting your daily life you, should consider making an appointment with a spine specialist.
When surgery is recommended, Merit Health Wesley is committed to offering neurosurgical and spine services to help patients find relief and get back to their lives. Surgeons utilize minimally invasive options whenever possible. Services include cervical, lumbar and general spine procedures to address a variety of nerve root, spinal cord and other related conditions. Surgical services include:
Cervical (Neck):
- Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion – A common surgical procedure to treat nerve root or spinal cord compression by decompressing the spinal cord and nerve roots of the cervical spine in order to stabilize the corresponding vertebrae. Used when other non-surgical treatments have failed.
- Anterior corpectomy
- Cervical disectomy
- Posterior cervical fusion
Lumbar (Back):
- Lumbar laminectomy
- Posterior lumbar interbody fusion
General Spine Procedures:
- Laminectomy for excision of mass or lesion
- Open reduction and internal fixation
- Chiari decompression surgery
- Kyphoplasty
- Dorsal column stimulator implants/revision/removal
Robotic-Assisted Spine Surgery
Merit Health Wesley offers robotic-assisted surgical options for patients with debilitating back and leg pain caused by spinal deformities and degenerative conditions, such as scoliosis and slipped vertebrae with pinched nerves. Robotic-assisted surgical treatments can transform the way spinal surgery is performed by enabling surgeons to have a more predictable surgical experience with increased accuracy.
Before surgery, a computed tomography (CT) scan is taken of the spine, and the robotic-assisted surgery system creates a 3D anatomical model. This allows surgeons to determine a spinal alignment plan before surgery based on each patients' unique anatomy.
During surgery, the software provides real-time information to optimize implant positioning and alignment. The robotic-assisted surgery system provides measurements and visualization of the patient's unique anatomy, enabling the surgeon to adjust and customize the plan as needed.
Because robotic-assisted spine surgery is less invasive, patients have the potential to experience reduced pain, regain motion sooner and return to their daily activities quicker.
Other potential benefits include:
- Less bleeding, pain and scarring
- Shorter hospital stays
- Faster recovery
Non-Surgical Spine Care Options
Merit Health Wesley also offers non-surgical solutions to treat back and neck pain. Rehabilitation specialists deliver a range of physical therapy treatments, including preventive and post-surgery recovery programs. The specialized care team offers a wide range of non-surgical treatments to meet each individual’s needs.
