Selecting a Pediatrician
Of all the decisions you’ll make about your new baby, this one deserves some real thought. You’ll be spending a lot of time with your pediatrician over the first year of your baby’s life, so choosing one that’s right for you is important. Merit Health Wesley is here to help, with a few tips.
A great place to start looking is by asking your obstetrician for a referral. Friends and family with children are also a good resource.
Once you’ve picked a few, arrange a personal interview with each of your choices during the final months of your pregnancy. Make sure you agree with the pediatrician’s policies and philosophy about child rearing.
Here’s a few questions to ask:
- How soon after birth will the pediatrician see the baby?
- When will newborn exams take place?
- When is the doctor available by phone?
- What hospital does the pediatrician prefer to use?
- What do I do if there’s an emergency?
- How are non-emergencies handled?
- Who will I see if my pediatrician is unavailable?
- How often will the pediatrician see my baby for checkups and immunizations?
- What are the costs of care?
