Neonatal Intensive Care
Every parent wants a healthy baby. Sometimes though, a newborn needs a little help getting there. We’re here to provide round the clock care for sick or premature infants in our newborn intensive care unit, or NICU. If a NICU admission is anticipated, parents and family will be offered the opportunity to meet with NICU staff to discuss the individualized care for your infant.
Our Level III NICU houses specialized equipment and developmental processes designed to provide care for premature babies. The space is conducive to facilitating the care given to some of our smallest premature babies.
The NICU provides care for premature infants as well as infants with:
- Birth defects and genetic syndromes
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Infections or sepsis
- Kidney disorders
- Neonatal surgical needs
- Respiratory disorders
Neonatologists
Neonatologists are pediatricians who have had additional training to specialize in the care of newborns. A neonatologist is experienced in caring for healthy babies as well as those who need more attention. Board-certified neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners supervise the care of all newborns at Merit Health Wesley.
