Merit Health Wesley Welcomes New Director of Human Resources

Hattiesburg, MS – Merit Health Wesley recently welcomed Corey Smelcer as director of human resources. Smelcer has a strong background in employee recruitment, development and engagement.

Originally from Atwater, California, Smelcer attended Brigham Young University of Idaho, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in political science with an emphasis in human resource management. He earned his Professional in Human Resources certification and began his career in human resources with Cargill, an agricultural supply chain company that is one of the nation’s largest privately held companies. Smelcer then joined Georgia Pacific as a senior manager of human resources. This position eventually led him to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he has lived since March of 2020.

“Working with the team at Georgia Pacific during the pandemic to ensure that facilities were staffed appropriately and employees had the resources they needed was a challenge I enjoyed being able to find solutions for,” said Smelcer. “In many ways, the healthcare industry is still facing these challenges. As a hospital, we are focused on recruiting the right team members, making sure they have the resources they need to be successful, and creating an environment of appreciation and engagement. I look forward to working with the team here at Merit Health Wesley to achieve these goals.”
