One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Although the causes of breast cancer are still unknown, there are many factors including advancing age and family history that may increase someone’s risk for breast cancer.
“Mammograms save lives,” said Phebe McKay, chief nursing officer at Merit Health Wesley. “Today, thanks to early detection and treatment advances, women are surviving breast cancer and living longer, healthier lives.”
For women of average risk, the American College of Radiology and Society of Breast Imaging recommend annual screening mammograms beginning at age 40. Different guidelines apply to women at higher risk. A screening mammogram can help detect breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages.
“The fact is that mammography is the best tool available to screen for breast cancer,” McKay said. “At present, there are no tests to replace mammography.”
